Gunmen attacked a vehicle carrying traders from the Kara Bukuru Livestock Market in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday. The attack left one person dead and seven others injured.
A community source told PREMIUM TIMES that the victims were heading to Bassa Local Government Area when the attackers opened fire. This happened near the Total Filling Station at Yelwa Club Junction in Bukuru at around 5:30 p.m.
The injured were taken to a hospital for treatment. Their condition is not clear at this time.
Ibrahim Babayo, the Plateau State chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), confirmed the attack. He strongly condemned what happened.
Mr Babayo called on security agencies to look into the incident and find those responsible. He urged the police, Operation Safe Haven, the State Security Service, and other security bodies to boost security along the Kara Bukuru market route. He wants measures to prevent more attacks on traders and herders.
He also asked members of the association to stay calm and avoid any retaliation. The attack raises serious worries about the safety of traders and herders on routes around the Kara Bukuru livestock market.
Attempts to get comments from the Plateau State Police Command and Operation Enduring Peace were not successful by the time this report was filed. The identity of the attackers and their motive remain unknown.
