Australia Praises Team Nigeria for Great Showing at Commonwealth Games

The Australian High Commission in Nigeria has praised Team Nigeria for its impressive performance at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. Nigeria finished as the highest-ranked African nation.

In a message on their official Facebook page, the High Commission also recognized Team Australia for leading the medals table for the third time in a row.

“Congratulations to Team Australia on topping the medal table at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games for a third consecutive Games,” the High Commission said.

They added, “We also celebrate Team Nigeria, Africa’s top-performing nation, on an outstanding seventh-place finish.

The Australian High Commission is proud of the dedication, talent, and sportsmanship shown by athletes from both countries.

“Well done, Team Australia and Team Nigeria!”

Nigeria wrapped up the Games with 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals. They finished seventh overall and outperformed every other African nation.

Australia led the Games with 70 gold, 45 silver, and 56 bronze medals, totaling 171 medals. England and Canada took the second and third spots, respectively.

Several remarkable performances stood out during Nigeria’s campaign. Samuel Ogazi became the first Nigerian man to win the Commonwealth Games 400 meters title. Ezekiel Nathaniel also made history as Nigeria’s first Commonwealth champion in the men’s 400m hurdles.

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi broke new ground by winning the men’s shot put title at the Games. The athletics team brought in the most medals for Nigeria.

Ruth Usoro won silver in the women’s long jump, Udodi Onwuzurike took silver in the men’s 200m, and Ella Onojuvwevwo ended Nigeria’s 32-year wait for a women’s 400m medal with bronze.

Nigeria also secured medals in weightlifting, para sports, and judo, marking one of its best performances at the Commonwealth Games in recent years.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games included athletes from 74 nations and territories. They competed across 10 sports for 1,168 medals in 215 medal events.
