The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, has praised Team Nigeria for their great performance at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. Nigeria finished as the top African country at the event.
Montgomery held a reception in Abuja on Friday to honor the Nigerian athletes, coaches, and officials who took part in the Games. About 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories joined the competition.
The British High Commission shared a statement on Saturday, reminding everyone how Nigeria was the only African country in the overall top 10. The country won a total of 24 medals, which included 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze.
At the reception, Montgomery said Nigeria’s performance showed the nation’s sporting talent, hard work, and strength.
He stated, “It was a pleasure to welcome Team Nigeria’s athletes, coaches, and officials to celebrate their achievements at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. Nigeria’s performances in Glasgow demonstrated remarkable talent, dedication, and resilience.
“Sport has a unique ability to bring people together, and today’s reception reflects the strong and enduring partnership between the United Kingdom and Nigeria, built on shared values and longstanding Commonwealth ties.”
Many athletes, coaches, and officials from the National Sports Commission and the Nigerian Olympic Committee attended the event. Representatives from the British High Commission were also present.
The reception highlighted the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom. It also showed how sport helps build friendship and connections across the Commonwealth.
Shehu Dikko, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, called Team Nigeria’s performance a source of pride for the nation. He promised to keep supporting the athletes.
He said, “The outstanding performances of our athletes, coaches, and officials in Glasgow have made the entire nation proud. Their record-breaking achievements, historic milestones, and unwavering commitment have once again demonstrated Nigeria’s immense sporting potential.
“We will continue to strengthen the support systems around our athletes, provide the necessary enablers to build on this momentum towards future global competitions, and ensure they have every opportunity to achieve even greater success on the world stage.”
Aseosa Uwagboe, the Head of Communications at the British High Commission in Abuja, mentioned that the reception was a chance to honor the Nigerian team for their achievements.
“This reception was an opportunity to recognize the athletes, coaches, and officials who represented Nigeria with distinction at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
“Sport remains one of the strongest connectors between our countries, bringing people together through shared values of determination, respect, and excellence. We were delighted to welcome Team Nigeria and celebrate their achievements alongside our partners,” Uwagboe said.
