President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday congratulated Team Nigeria for their great performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The country brought home 24 medals.
Nigeria finished the Games with 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals. The President said this result shows the resilience, discipline, and determination of Nigerian athletes.
In a statement from his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said the athletes flew Nigeria's flag with pride during the competition.
He mentioned that the medals are “a testament to their hard work and perseverance.” He added that the experience the athletes gained will help them achieve even more in future competitions and inspire young Nigerians to be committed and serve the nation.
“Whether on the podium or through courageous performances in the competition, every member of Team Nigeria has represented our nation with honour, dignity, and pride.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I express profound appreciation to our athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators, and all those whose dedication and sacrifice made Nigeria's participation at the Games possible,” the President said.
Tinubu also praised the leadership of the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the National Sports Commission for their work in developing sports and supporting athletes.
“My administration remains committed to investing in sports development, strengthening our sporting institutions, improving training facilities, and creating more opportunities for our talented athletes to shine on the continental and global stage.”
He urged Team Nigeria members to stay focused and keep aiming for excellence.
The PUNCH had earlier reported that Team Nigeria ended its campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with 24 medals, which includes 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze.
This medal count marks another good outing for Nigeria at the Games. However, it is less than the country’s best performances in recent years.
Nigeria won 35 medals: 12 gold, nine silver, and 14 bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, topping the African medals table. In the 2018 Gold Coast Games in Australia, Team Nigeria returned with 24 medals made up of nine gold, nine silver, and six bronze. The country had an even better showing at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, winning 36 medals, which included 11 gold, 11 silver, and 14 bronze.
