Al Ittihad forward George Ilenikhena, Alverca left-back Isaac James, and LASK forward Moses Usor have received their first call-ups to the Super Eagles. They will play in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau this month. PETER AKINBO looks at the three new players.
Head coach Eric Chelle announced a 24-man squad on Thursday for Nigeria’s Group L matches. The Super Eagles will host Madagascar in Uyo on September 25, then travel to take on Guinea-Bissau on September 29. Tanzania is also in the group as co-hosts.
George Ilenikhena (Al Ittihad)
George Ilenikhena was born in Lagos. He started his career at French club Amiens, then moved to Royal Antwerp where he developed further and later signed with Monaco. He gained attention there, especially for his performances in the UEFA Champions League.
Earlier this year, he joined Al Ittihad but had trouble with fitness and finding a spot in the team. This season, he has turned things around with six goals and two assists in nine matches across all competitions.
The 20-year-old had played for France at youth levels, but he has now chosen to represent Nigeria. His call-up is timely as Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu are both dealing with injuries. He will have the chance to make his debut against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
Isaac James (Alverca)
Isaac James plays as a left-back in Portugal. He has been called up mainly because Zaidu Sanusi is injured, leaving Coach Chelle with fewer choices in that position.
At 22 years old, he has shown his skills at his club and will look to bring that form to the national team if he gets the opportunity. He is also part of the squad for the friendly match against Russia on October 6.
Moses Usor (LASK)
Moses Usor had an impressive 2025/26 season with LASK in Austria. He helped his team win both the league and cup, and they qualified for the Champions League for the first time in the club's history.
At 24 years old, he is another player that many Nigerians are excited to see play for the national team.
