Australia pulled off a surprising 2-0 win against Turkey in their World Cup Group D opener on Saturday. Coach Tony Popovic's risky decisions paid off in a big way.
Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe scored the goals, while rookie goalkeeper Patrick Beach made several key saves. This helped Australia secure a memorable victory at Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium.
Popovic made a bold move by leaving out experienced captain and goalkeeper Maty Ryan. He chose Beach, who was making only his third appearance for the national team. Vice-captain Jackson Irvine was also benched in favor of 21-year-old midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler. This starting lineup included 10 players making their World Cup debuts.
These choices turned out to be smart ones. Beach made a series of impressive saves to keep Turkey at bay. Despite controlling the ball and the game, Turkey could not get past the Australian goalkeeper.
Okon-Engstler played a key role in the first goal. He sent a long ball that broke through the Turkish defense, allowing Irankunda to sprint towards the goal and score.
Turkey was competing in the World Cup for the first time since finishing third in 2002. They came to North America hoping to make a strong run in the knockout stages.
But their skilled team, filled with players from the European Champions League, struggled against a well-organized Australian team. One of Turkey’s best chances came in the 27th minute. Real Madrid’s Arda Guler took a powerful shot, forcing a smart save from Beach.
Just moments after that chance, Australia took the lead. Beach found Okon-Engstler deep in his half. The young midfielder sent the ball upfield to Irankunda.
Irankunda still had work to do, but with a clever first touch, he got past the defense and finished low into the net. He celebrated by running to the edge of the pitch and pretending to box the corner flag, just like former Australia captain Tim Cahill.
Turkey thought they had equalized three minutes later. Abdulkerim Bardakci fired a powerful shot from outside the area. But Beach got his fingertips to the ball, deflecting it onto the post and keeping Australia ahead.
Beach continued his great performance in the second half. He turned a Guler free-kick wide for a corner in the 57th minute. With Beach making save after save, Australia sealed the win in the 75th minute.
Metcalfe took the ball in midfield, moved towards goal, and fired a shot from 25 yards out, scoring Australia’s second goal. This victory puts Australia level on three points with Group D leaders the United States. The two teams will face each other in Seattle on Friday.
