Awoniyi shines in first full match for Coventry City with goal and assist

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi had a fantastic start in his first full match for Coventry City. He scored one goal and assisted another as the Sky Blues beat Plymouth Argyle 4-2 in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Awoniyi made his mark just three minutes into the game. He scored with a calm right-footed shot from the left side of the box into the bottom-right corner.

Two minutes later, he turned into a creator. Awoniyi set up Jack Rudoni with a perfect assist. Rudoni then found the bottom-right corner with a left-footed shot from the right side of the box.

Plymouth Argyle pulled one back in the 21st minute. Oliver Irow, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, scored, leaving Coventry ahead 2-1 at halftime.

The second half started with excitement as Plymouth equalized nine minutes in. Xavier Amaechi dribbled through the defense and slotted the ball in, making it 2-2. But the joy for Plymouth was short-lived.

Coventry responded quickly. Ephron Mason-Clark scored in the 67th minute, and Victor Torp added another goal in the 78th minute. This helped Coventry secure a solid 4-2 win and move to the next round of the cup.

Awoniyi's night ended with 20 minutes left when he was replaced by fellow summer signing Sidiki Cherif.

This performance was a big step for the former Union Berlin striker. Awoniyi joined Coventry during the summer transfer window.

He made his debut in the Premier League against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, coming off the bench with 20 minutes to go in a 3-0 defeat to the champions. He replaced former Everton player Ellis Reco Simms in that match but got his first start against Plymouth, making the most of it.

The goal and assist will surely boost Awoniyi's confidence as he aims to get back to his best form and become a key player for Coventry.

With the Sky Blues aiming to stay in the Premier League for the 2026/27 season, Awoniyi will hope that his strong performance in the Carabao Cup is just the beginning of a successful goal-scoring run.
