New Super Eagles winger Femi Azeez had a great start with the team on Tuesday. He scored two goals in a 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final at The Valley in London, according to The PUNCH.
Azeez was one of 12 debutants chosen for Nigeria’s title defence in London. The Millwall forward got to start in a team with many new faces. He scored in both halves, helping Nigeria reach the final on Saturday.
Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo was in goal. Rangers International defenders Chibueze Oputa and Kenneth Igboke also started alongside Azeez. With Wilfred Ndidi absent, 2023 AFCON silver medallist Terem Moffi led the team and wore the captain's armband.
Nigeria were the clear favourites at kick-off in Charlton. They took the lead with their first real attack. Debutant Philip Otele tried to enter the box but was stopped. The ball fell to Moffi, who set up Azeez for a low left-foot shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Moffi almost scored again soon after but was unlucky. Azeez also tried another shot from a distance, but it was easily saved by the goalkeeper. At the other end, Zimbabwe had some nervous moments but did not really test Okonkwo.
Just before half-time, Nigeria came close again. But Zimbabwe goalkeeper Future Sibanda saved the day once more. Tochukwu Nnadi also missed a chance, sending the ball wide as both teams headed to the break.
Zimbabwe started the second half stronger and had more possession. Their movement and teamwork in the attacking area put pressure on Nigeria’s defence, led by Igoh Ogbu and Chibuike Nwaiwu.
After surviving the early pressure, Nigeria increased their lead after the hour mark. A quick counter-attack ended with Azeez scoring again, thanks to another good play from Moffi on the left.
Once Nigeria went two goals up, Okonkwo faced a long-range shot from Jonah Fabisch but made the save. Coach Eric Chelle then made some changes, bringing on Rafiu Durosinmi, Tosin Oyedokun, and Oseni Owen for Terem Moffi, Samson Tijani, and Philip Otele.
Despite a late push from the Warriors, the Super Eagles held on for the win. Jamaica and India will play in the second semi-final on Wednesday. The winner will meet Nigeria in the final on March 30.
