Bandits attack in Kebbi leaves 10 police officers and 2 civilians dead

Ten police officers and two civilians lost their lives in a clash between security forces and a well-armed group of suspected bandits in Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The Kebbi State Police Command shared this information in a statement on Tuesday from its spokesman, SP Bashir Usman. He also mentioned that at least 17 suspected bandits were killed during the fight.

The incident took place around 9:25 am on Monday along the Rafin Makuku route. Security personnel stopped the bandits who were reportedly moving between Zamfara and Kebbi states.

Usman said the security forces engaged the bandits in a gun battle, adding that the exact number of bandits killed still needs to be confirmed.

"Many of the attackers were neutralised, with at least 17 suspected bandits so far assessed to have been neutralised," he said.

He also mentioned that four motorcycles used by the bandits were destroyed during the encounter.

According to the police spokesman, the security forces faced heavy losses, with 10 police officers killed and two others injured and receiving treatment.

"We lost ten brave police personnel in the engagement, while two others sustained injuries and are receiving medical attention," Usman said.

He remembered the fallen officers as courageous personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the people of the state.

"Our fallen personnel fought with great courage and professionalism in the line of duty, making the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the people and the state," he added.

Usman stated, "Their bravery, service, and sacrifice will be duly honoured and will not be forgotten."

The police also confirmed that two civilians died during the clash.

The command said its first concern is to support the families of the deceased officers, care for the injured, and continue operations against the fleeing bandits.

"Our immediate priority remains supporting the affected families, caring for the wounded, and sustaining follow-up operations against fleeing elements," Usman said.

He assured residents that more information on the incident would be provided as the situation is fully assessed.

"Further details will be communicated as they are verified," he added.
