A humanitarian worker, Ms Lydia Nwankwo, has died in an attack by suspected bandits in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
Nwankwo, known for her work in field operations, was attacked with her team while returning from Kajiji community on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
Her sister, Chisom Nwankwo, shared the sad news on Facebook on Thursday. She announced the death of her sister, who worked hard to help others.
According to family members, the team faced heavy gunfire when the attackers opened fire on their vehicle, killing Nwankwo instantly.
This tragic event has left her colleagues and others in the humanitarian community in Sokoto grieving. Those who worked with her praise her dedication to helping vulnerable communities in difficult areas.
The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed the attack, stating that suspected bandits targeted several communities in Shagari Local Government Area.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmed Rufai, spoke about the incident. He said the Divisional Police Officer for Shagari had briefed the state command.
Rufai mentioned that the police are still gathering information on the attack and could not provide more details at this time. He said, “I just spoke with the DPO in charge of Shagari now, who confirmed the attack on some communities in the local government. We are still on it. I cannot give details now until I gather my information about the incident. I will get back to you on it.”
This attack has raised worries about security in the affected communities. Residents are calling for more police presence and regular patrols in Shagari and nearby areas to stop future attacks.
