What started as a love story between two Big Brother Naija housemates has turned into a legal fight over unpaid loans, marriage promises, deceit claims, and defamation threats.
The public fallout between ex-BBN housemates Bella Okagbue and Segun “Sheggz” Olusemo has taken a legal turn after they ended their four-year relationship. Bella’s lawyers are planning to take Sheggz to court over loans they say he took from her under false pretenses.
This came after Sheggz’s legal team sent a notice accusing Bella of making harmful statements about him and his family during their highly publicized breakup.
In a response dated 24 August, Bella’s lawyers called the accusations “spurious and baseless.” They rejected demands for Bella to take back her statements, apologize, or stop talking about the issue publicly.
The lawyers also claimed that Sheggz took “several loans by false pretence” from Bella. They said they have proof to back this up and will take the case to a court.
How their relationship started
Bella and Sheggz met during the 2022 edition of BBNaija. Their romance was a big part of the “Level Up” season.
The couple, known to fans as “Shella,” continued their relationship after leaving the reality show. They became one of the most talked-about celebrity couples from the franchise.
Their relationship lasted about four years, even with some reports of problems between them. They often discussed marriage, with Sheggz expressing his desire to build a future with Bella.
However, Sheggz confirmed on 19 August that they broke up in January 2026. In a long statement on X, he said the breakup was due to unresolved “issues of trust and respect,” which he could not ignore while thinking about marriage.
Sheggz denied cheating on Bella or abusing her. He also said that any attempts to reconcile after the breakup failed. He shared that he had bought an engagement ring because he truly wanted to marry Bella and believed in their future.
Bella speaks out
Bella later addressed the breakup, explaining that she chose to stay quiet at first because some matters should remain private.
She expressed that she genuinely loved Sheggz and defended their relationship back then. Bella also pushed back against claims that wanting marriage made her desperate, saying that leaving a relationship could show good judgment.
She mentioned receiving “a hundred promises” that were never kept. Bella said she had given love, loyalty, and chances for change before deciding to move on.
She acknowledged the many stories about their breakup but made it clear that she would not share every detail of what happened between them.
₦11m debt claim
The situation got more complicated when private WhatsApp chats involving Bella, Sheggz, and their family members leaked online.
In one chat, Bella reportedly told Sheggz’s mother that he owed her ₦11 million and had refused to pay it back. She claimed this debt was causing her financial problems, affecting her ability to pay rent and other bills.
Other chats reportedly focused on marriage promises and disagreements about their future together. Screenshots also appeared online showing Sheggz asking Bella for money.
However, it is not clear if the leaked chats are real, and a court has not ruled on the alleged ₦11 million debt. Bella’s lawyers’ response on 24 August mentioned “several loans” taken under false pretenses, but they did not specify a total amount in the parts of the letter that were widely shared.
Sheggz’s legal team sends notice
Sheggz’s lawyers reportedly sent a cease-and-desist notice and a defamation notice around 21 August. They accused Bella of making statements that could harm his reputation, including claims of abuse, the ₦11 million debt, and comments about him and his family.
They also claimed she was cyberbullying him and warned that her statements could affect his relationships with friends and business associates.
The lawyers demanded that Bella stop making the alleged defamatory statements, delete relevant content, and publicly apologize.
Bella’s lawyers reject the claims
Bella’s lawyers pushed back on the allegations, saying her social media posts were expressions of her emotions and personal experiences, not defamation.
They refused the demands for an apology, a retraction, or a cease-and-desist. Instead, Bella’s lawyers described the relationship as involving an alleged “breach of promise to marry” and what they called deceit.
They maintained that Sheggz took several loans from Bella under false pretenses and stated they would pursue the case in court. They said they have evidence to support their claims.
Bella’s legal team also accused a member of Sheggz’s team of regularly contacting her with unwanted messages and calls at odd hours. They called this behavior unethical and warned the person to stop.
Ongoing dispute
Despite the tensions, the issue is still at the pre-action stage as of 26 August, with no court ruling on the competing claims so far. There is no official finding that Sheggz owes Bella ₦11 million or took money from her dishonestly. Likewise, the defamation claims against Bella are still disputed.
Any future lawsuit will need both sides to present proof for their claims.
