Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler has said the club cannot tell when Femi Azeez will make his competitive debut. The Nigerian winger missed Thursday’s UEFA Conference League match against Jablonec.
Azeez joined the Seagulls from Millwall on transfer deadline day, September 2. But he has not played a competitive minute for the Premier League team.
The 25-year-old came to the Amex Stadium with a minor hamstring issue. This made Hurzeler manage his training carefully. Later, a setback pushed back his return past the international break.
Azeez started training with his new teammates earlier this month, raising hopes of seeing him play. However, Hurzeler told The Argus that there is still no clear timeline for when he will be available.
“With Femi, again we have to be patient with him. It’s not quite clear how long it will take,” the German said.
He gave some reassurance about the injury but did not provide a specific date for Azeez’s return. “It seems to be not a big issue, but therefore we have to be patient with Femi,” Hurzeler added.
When he is fit, Azeez will face tough competition for a spot. Brighton has started the season strongly. Last season, Azeez troubled defenders in the Championship, scoring 11 goals and providing seven assists in 37 matches.
He helped Millwall reach the play-offs. He also made both the PFA and EFL Championship teams of the season.
