Burkina Faso defeats Nigeria in U-20 Championship Final

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles lost 4-1 to Burkina Faso’s Young Stallions in the final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship. The match took place at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast, on Sunday, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

This loss means Nigeria will not play in the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations. It also means they will miss the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan.

Burkina Faso had already beaten Nigeria 2-0 earlier in the group stage. With this victory, they completed a double over Nigeria, who are seven-time African champions. Burkina Faso claimed the regional title and will join hosts Ghana as representatives from WAFU Zone B at next year’s U-20 AFCON.

Nigeria hoped for revenge but faced an uphill battle. Abdul Maikaba’s team conceded three goals in the first 15 minutes of the match. The Flying Eagles managed to score from a penalty in the second half. But the Stallions quickly dashed any hopes of a comeback with a late goal.

This defeat also ended Nigeria’s chance to keep the regional title they won in Lomé in October 2024. In recent meetings, Burkina Faso has had the upper hand. Their 2024 WAFU Zone B match in Lomé ended in a 1-0 win for Burkina Faso. They also played to a 2-2 draw when they met in Niger Republic in 2022.

The Flying Eagles came into the final hoping to defend their title and secure one of the two spots for the 2027 U-20 AFCON. Unfortunately, their dreams have come to an end.
