Fulham defender Calvin Bassey has reached 100 Premier League appearances. He achieved this milestone in Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Ipswich Town, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Bassey played the full 90 minutes at Portman Road. That was his sixth league match this season. He is the 28th player to make 100 league appearances for Fulham. He is also the second Nigerian to reach this mark for the club after his Super Eagles teammate Alex Iwobi, who has 103 appearances.
The 26-year-old has scored three goals and provided one assist in those 100 matches, totaling 8,411 minutes of play. If you count cup competitions, he has played 108 times for Fulham, scoring four goals.
Bassey started his career at the Leicester City academy. He then played 65 matches for Rangers and 39 matches for Ajax. He joined Fulham from Ajax in July 2023.
Transfermarkt reports that 16 Nigerian players had already made 100 appearances before him. Iwobi tops the list with 320 appearances. He is followed by Shola Ameobi with 299, Nwankwo Kanu with 272, Yakubu Aiyegbeni with 252, and John Obi Mikel with 249. Joseph Yobo has 228, while Wilfred Ndidi and Victor Moses both have 220. Kelechi Iheanacho has 196, Jay-Jay Okocha has 124, and Ola Aina has 109.
Sadly, this milestone came on a tough day for Fulham. They seemed set to grab their first league win of the season after Ryan Sessegnon scored in the 55th minute. But Ipswich equalized with a goal from Abdoul Ouattara in the 88th minute. Captain Dara O’Shea then scored the winner in the 92nd minute. Iwobi, who was playing his sixth league game this season, was replaced by Emile Smith Rowe in the 87th minute.
This defeat leaves Fulham in the relegation zone with only two points from six games. The pressure is now on head coach Álvaro Arbeloa as he looks for his first win in charge.
