Canadian Prime Minister wants FIFA president to resign

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, whose country is co-hosting the 2026 World Cup, joined many others on Wednesday in criticizing Gianni Infantino. He said he no longer trusts Infantino to lead FIFA.

"Certainly I don’t have confidence in Mr Infantino, after this point, given what transpired," Carney told reporters when asked about FIFA’s president and his now-cancelled plan to allow private investment in the World Cup.

Infantino is under more pressure now, even from people within FIFA, for how he handled the proposal. Calls for him to resign have increased since he dropped the plan last Saturday.

Carney said that Infantino’s failure to discuss the plan with FIFA’s senior management team "should be fatal" to his position as head of world football’s governing body.

"This is not how you run any business, a small business, let alone something that is a global responsibility like football," Carney added in Toronto.

Infantino held emergency talks earlier Wednesday with FIFA directors in Morocco, where the 2030 World Cup will be hosted, trying to manage the situation.

Infantino had been enjoying the success of a very well-organized World Cup, the biggest ever with 48 teams, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the US.

But now, his time in charge is facing a serious challenge. There is a lot of anger worldwide over the cancelled plan. This plan aimed to create a new commercial branch called the FIFA Forward Enterprise to manage events like the World Cup.
