Celtic coach Martin O’Neill is still in the hospital after having a “small procedure,” the club stated.

The Scottish side did not share details about the procedure. They mentioned that the 74-year-old from Northern Ireland is likely to leave the hospital in one or two days.

In a statement made on social media on Wednesday, Celtic said: “In response to speculation, we can confirm that Martin O’Neill has undergone a small procedure in hospital.

“We would envisage Martin being released from hospital in the next day or two and on behalf of Martin, we would like to thank supporters for their kind wishes.

“We would ask that the privacy of Martin and his family is respected.”

O’Neill signed a one-year contract in June to be Celtic’s permanent coach. This came after two temporary terms last season, which ended with the club winning both the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish Cup.

The experienced coach was in charge on Monday as Celtic kicked off their Premiership season with a 1-0 win at home against Dundee.

O’Neill came back to Celtic last October, 20 years after his first successful term, following Brendan Rodgers’ resignation.

After a short period where he gave the job to Wilfried Nancy in December, O’Neill returned when Nancy was let go after eight games.

The former Leicester City, Aston Villa, and Republic of Ireland manager later led Celtic to domestic victories before signing a one-year deal with an option for another year.
