Martin O’Neill, the new Celtic manager, has a big decision to make about Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho. His contract ends this month, and a decision is expected soon after O’Neill officially takes over, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Celtic can extend Iheanacho’s contract for another year under the current terms. But the club is not likely to do this without first reaching an agreement with the player.
The choice now lies with O’Neill. He praised Iheanacho's contributions at the club but admitted that managing his fitness has been a challenge.
Alan McInally, a former Scotland international and analyst, supports keeping Iheanacho. He highlighted the striker's goal-scoring ability as something the team should not lose.
“If he can perform the way he did in the last six games over the course of the season, then he’s obviously worth keeping. You look at his quality and his ability in front of goal, that doesn’t come easily.
“If the manager feels he can get him going again, then he’s definitely worth keeping,” McInally said.
Iheanacho scored key goals that helped Celtic win the Scottish Premiership. He finished the season strong, despite dealing with fitness issues throughout the year.
O’Neill believes that a full pre-season could greatly benefit Iheanacho. A new contract, possibly with different terms, is still on the table.
At 29, Iheanacho has been one of the standout Nigerian players in Europe this season. He aims to earn a spot in Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle’s plans for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches.
