Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police have raided a suspected criminal hideout in Idu Uruan Village, Uruan Local Government Area. They arrested two people suspected of dealing drugs and found a large amount of substances believed to be Indian hemp and Cannabis sativa.
This operation took place at around 1:30am on September 9, 2026. Police acted on reliable information about criminal activities in the area.
DSP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer, released a statement on Saturday in Uyo. The command explained that this raid is part of their effort to tackle criminal hideouts and organized crime in the state.
According to DSP Timfon John, the arrested suspects are Fortune Effiong (male) and Comfort Effiong (female). A detailed search of the hideout uncovered significant amounts of suspected Indian hemp and Cannabis sativa, which were likely meant for selling and use.
The statement said, "The Akwa Ibom State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has intensified its intelligence-led operations against criminal elements, drug dealers, and others involved in violent and organized crime across the state."
The commissioner praised the officers for their professionalism and bravery. He ordered a thorough investigation to make sure everyone involved in the drug trade is caught.
CP Baba Mohammed Azare expressed worry about drug networks and their harmful effects on public safety and youth development. He said, "Akwa Ibom State will not be a safe place for criminals, drug dealers, cultists, violent offenders, or anyone whose actions disturb the peace of law-abiding citizens."
He also urged the public to stay alert and share any suspicious activities with the police. He assured them that their information would be kept confidential.
"I encourage everyone to remain vigilant and provide credible and timely information about suspected criminals to the police. This information will be treated confidentially and used to support ongoing security operations."
The commissioner added that the suspects are now in police custody and the investigation is still in progress.
