Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has made $75,000 (around N100m) after coming second in the women’s 100m hurdles at the first World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary.
Amusan finished the final with a time of 12.34 seconds, placing behind American Olympic champion Masai Russell, who won with a time of 12.22 seconds.
Russell’s win added to her impressive 2026 season. Earlier, she broke Amusan’s world record in Zurich, clocking in at 12.09 seconds.
Amusan’s second-place finish got her the second-highest prize in the event, while the winner took home $150,000. World Athletics set a record prize pool of $10 million for the championship, which lasts for three days.
The Ultimate Championship runs from September 11 to 13. This new biennial event aims to gather Olympic and world champions, Diamond League winners, and top performers to find the best in the sport.
Amusan reached the final after finishing second in her semi-final with a time of 12.49 seconds.
In the semi-final, she was just behind Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton, who won with a time of 12.45 seconds. However, Amusan secured one of the automatic spots to qualify for the final.
Russell came into the final as the top contender after winning her semi-final in 12.38 seconds.
World Athletics had marked Russell as the athlete to watch, noting she came to Budapest unbeaten in 2026. She had broken the world record and claimed her first Diamond League title. Before the championship, Amusan was recognized as the second-fastest woman in the world this year at 12.23 seconds.
The final was another showdown between two of the top competitors in the event. This followed Russell’s record-breaking run in Zurich and her Diamond League win in Brussels.
Before heading to Budapest, Amusan had finished fourth behind Russell at the Diamond League final in Brussels.
