Nigeria’s Future Eagles will kick off the next stage of the FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival on Wednesday. They finished their group stage in Baku, Azerbaijan, without losing any match.
The Nigerian team ended up third in Group AD with seven points from five matches. They had one win and four draws, which secured their spot in Tier C of the tournament.
On Monday, they ended the group stage with a 2-1 win over Cyprus. They also had a 1-1 draw against Pakistan.
Wisdom Oche scored the first goal for Nigeria against Cyprus. Captain Timothy Ogar Ijachi scored the winning goal to complete the comeback.
Ijachi was also on the score sheet against Pakistan. He equalised in the 25th minute after Kaleemullah had put the Asian side ahead just four minutes earlier.
These results kept Nigeria's unbeaten streak alive after they drew with South Sudan, Jordan, and The Gambia in previous matches. Even though they did not lose any game, the Future Eagles finished behind Cyprus and South Sudan in the group standings.
This placement means they will compete in Tier C as the tournament moves into a new phase. The competition is set up in a tier format instead of just eliminating teams after the group stage. This gives all participating nations a chance to continue playing for titles and final rankings.
The second phase will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, with the tier finals set for Friday. The Future Eagles hope to build on their scoring form as they face their next challenge. This tournament is a great opportunity for the young players to gain experience against teams from other countries.
Nigeria scored 11 goals and let in 10 over their five group matches. This shows their attacking potential but also points to areas they need to improve on defensively.
Now, the team aims to turn their unbeaten record into better results in the knockout-style Tier C phase.
