Police nab two suspected drug dealers in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has caught two suspects for allegedly running a drug hideout in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said they seized substances believed to be Cannabis sativa, methamphetamine, and other illegal drugs worth ₦6.2 million. They also recovered ₦598,400 in cash after a raid on the hideout.

Ikenga mentioned that officers from the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu conducted the raid early Tuesday morning. During the operation, they arrested two men, Nzube Onyedikachukwu, known as “Onyeoma,” who is 47 years old, and 20-year-old Ugochukwu Azia.

He said this action was part of the directives from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu.

The statement noted, “In line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on ongoing intelligence-led operations and the dismantling of criminal hideouts across the country, the Anambra State Command, under CP Nnanna Oji, has stepped up efforts against criminals and their bases in the state.

“Following reliable information about suspected drug dealers in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area, Rapid Response Squad operatives from the Command raided a suspected criminal hideout in Obosi and arrested two male suspects, Nzube Onyedikachukwu, alias 'Onyeoma,' 47 years old, and 20-year-old Ugochukwu Azia.

“A search of the hideout revealed a large quantity of substances believed to be Cannabis sativa, methamphetamine, and other illegal drugs valued at ₦6.2 million. They also found ₦598,400 in cash.

“Initial investigations show that the suspects are allegedly involved in drug distribution, and the location served as a meeting point for suspected criminals after their operations. Some other suspects reportedly ran away when they saw the police.

“The suspects are now in police custody, and investigations are ongoing to find out where the drugs came from, how they were distributed, and to identify other people involved in the operation. They also want to know the details about the cash found.”

Ikenga also mentioned that the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, emphasized that the command will continue to carry out intelligence-led raids, targeted operations, and proactive policing to dismantle criminal hideouts and prevent criminals from having safe places in the state.

The commissioner urged residents, traditional leaders, community heads, and other stakeholders to keep giving the police useful and timely information about suspicious people, criminal activities, and known criminal hideouts.
