Police arrest suspected drug dealer with ₦5.8m drugs in Anambra

The Anambra State Police has arrested a 28-year-old man, Chinedu Nwankwo, for suspected drug dealing. They recovered a large amount of Cannabis Sativa, Methamphetamine, and Colorado, worth about ₦5.8 million.

A press statement from the police on Saturday says that the Rapid Response Team caught the suspect during a patrol on Nteje-Otuocha Road in Anambra East Local Government Area. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest.

Ikenga mentioned that Nwankwo was allegedly transporting these drugs to Otuocha, Anyamelium, Nzam, Umuleri, and Aguleri for delivery to suspected criminals. The police are also looking into how these drugs might disrupt the ongoing local government elections in the state.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Ama, is aware of the situation. He noted that drug problems can lead to more crime and urged officers to keep up their operations to prevent crime.

The statement said, "The Anambra State Police has arrested a 28-year-old man, Chinedu Nwankwo, for suspected drug dealing. A large amount of Cannabis Sativa, Methamphetamine, and Colorado, worth about ₦5.8 million, was recovered."

"The suspect was arrested in the early hours of today, 29th August 2026, by the Rapid Response Team during a patrol on Nteje-Otuocha Road."

"Preliminary investigation shows that he was allegedly transporting these drugs to Otuocha, Anyamelium, Nzam, Umuleri, and Aguleri areas for suspected criminals."

"Investigators are also checking if these drugs might affect the ongoing local government elections in the state."

The police statement says that Nwankwo and the drugs are now in police custody. Investigations are ongoing to find out more about his activities and any other people involved.

CP Nnanna Ama praised the officers for their alertness and continuous patrols, especially during the elections. He said drugs contribute to crime, as drug trafficking can give people resources to commit violent acts.

He added that the police will keep conducting intelligence-led operations and targeted raids on criminal hideouts and other areas of interest with other security agencies to stop crime before it starts.

The police assured residents that they are committed to safety and protecting the electoral process across the state.
