Veteran entertainer and social activist Charles Oputa, known as Charly Boy, sees marriage as an ongoing process of management. He says disagreements are part of his life with his wife, Diane Oputa, even after almost five decades together.

In an interview on Yanga FM, the 75-year-old shared that no marriage is without conflict. He believes the key to lasting marriages is the ability to settle disputes.

"All marriages are management, including my own," Mr Oputa said.

"Me and my wife, we are like Tom and Jerry now. No day we won’t quarrel, and no day we won’t fix the quarrel."

Marriage after 48 years

Mr Oputa, often called the "Area Fada," said he and his wife will celebrate 48 years of marriage this year.

Thinking about their long-time relationship, he joked about spending so many years with just one partner.

"This year is going to be my 48 years of marriage. Just one woman. Ah, the thing is boring now. If every day you eat the same good soup, you won’t like it like that," he said.

When the hosts asked if he was promoting cheating, he quickly denied it.

"Not cheating, outsourcing," he said with a laugh.

When they pressed him for more details, Mr Oputa said they would have to "pay for lectures and tuition."

Speaking on marriage

Mr Oputa often shares his views on marriage and relationships.

In 2022, he tweeted that he was feeling tired of marriage and thought about leaving. This sparked discussions online. He later clarified that marriage needs constant effort and his comments aimed to challenge the myth of a perfect relationship.

His wife has also openly talked about the difficulties of keeping a long-term relationship. She often says marriage needs patience, understanding, and compromise.

Mr Oputa married Diane, known as Lady D, in 1979 after his first marriage ended. PREMIUM TIMES reported that the couple renewed their vows in 2018 during a ceremony led by Catholic Bishop Matthew Kukah.

His latest comments add to his long history of public discussions about marriage, relationships, and family life, making him one of Nigeria’s most vocal entertainers.
