Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has shown support for bringing back the Africa Cup of Nations to its two-year cycle. He says this format is important for developing football in Africa.

The Franco-Malian coach thinks hosting Africa’s biggest football tournament every two years will give teams more chances to grow, develop players, and face tough competition.

“For me, it’s perfect because when you want to improve, having one tournament every four years is difficult. So, having a tournament every two years now is perfect, so we can continue to improve,” Chelle told SABC Sport.

The Confederation of African Football had announced plans to change AFCON to a four-year cycle. Recently, CAF president Patrice Motsepe mentioned that this decision might be reviewed, sparking a new discussion about the tournament’s future.

Chelle, who was the coach of Mali at the 2023 AFCON and is now in charge of Nigeria for the 2025 edition, believes more tournaments would help African teams become as strong as their international rivals.

“We can grow together; we will play two big tournaments instead of the other nations playing one tournament,” he added.

The Super Eagles coach also pointed out that regular international competitions are essential for preparing African teams for the FIFA World Cup. He believes a biennial AFCON would give teams valuable experience and help them improve their tactics and skills.

Beyond football, Chelle mentioned the economic benefits of hosting the tournament more often. He noted that it could attract tourists, boost local businesses, and increase revenue for the countries that host.

With CAF reconsidering its current plans, Chelle’s support strengthens the ongoing discussion about AFCON’s schedule. He is confident that having the tournament every two years will help African football grow even more.
