With just two days left, the FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to bring big changes to international football. This tournament will feature 48 teams and will be hosted by three countries for the first time: Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

The tournament, seen as the top international football competition, will take place from June to July 2026. The final match is set for Sunday, 19 July 2026, in New York/New Jersey.

The opening match will happen on Thursday, 11 June 2026, in Mexico City.

New rules and regulations

FIFA has rolled out new rules for the tournament. These include giving red cards for walk-off protests and allowing players to wear items that were banned before, under certain conditions.

Official match ball and mascots

The official match ball, named adidas TRIONDA, was revealed on 2 October 2025. The name means “three waves,” representing the three host nations, with design colors of red, green, and blue.

The official mascots were introduced in September 2025: Maple™ the Moose (Canada), Zayu™ the Jaguar (Mexico), and Clutch™ the Bald Eagle (United States).

Tournament significance

The 2026 edition is historic as it is the first time three countries will host the World Cup and the first time 48 teams will compete. Argentina, the winner of the 2022 edition, will try to defend their title.
