Valentin Barco is now Chelsea’s seventh signing of the transfer window. He joined from sister club Strasbourg on a seven-year deal.
Barco is the second player from the Ligue 1 club to join Chelsea this transfer window after Emmanuel Emegha. This is the 13th deal between the two clubs, which share an ownership group, since last season began.
The 22-year-old was part of Argentina's squad that reached the World Cup final. He also had a heated argument with Jude Bellingham during the semi-final over his celebrations in front of England players.
Barco can play as a left-back or in midfield. He had a short time in the Premier League with Brighton three seasons ago.
He first moved to Strasbourg on loan from Brighton in 2024. He signed permanently a year later after helping the club qualify for the Conference League.
Barco's signing adds to Chelsea's busy summer in the transfer market. The club is looking to rebuild under new manager Xabi Alonso.
On Saturday, Chelsea confirmed they signed veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton. This came after they brought in Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace and Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.
Marco Palestra, Emegha, and Geovany Quenda have also joined the team.
