Chelsea has signed former England player Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion.
The club announced the signing on Saturday. The 35-year-old striker has signed a contract that runs until 2028. He will join Xabi Alonso’s team during Chelsea’s pre-season tour.
Welbeck expressed his excitement about the move, saying, “When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it’s something that fills you with such immense pride.”
He added, “Knowing the history of Chelsea, it’s a club that wants to win trophies and is pushing to do that every single season.”
Welbeck said he is honored to join Chelsea at this exciting time. He knows some of the players already and has had great talks with the manager. He feels a strong connection with the club.
He stated, “I’ve got that fire in my belly and I’m ready to give it everything for this club to make everyone at Chelsea, and the supporters, proud.”
Welbeck joins Chelsea with a lot of Premier League experience. He has played 400 matches in England’s top league.
He has also played in the UEFA Champions League and represented England in two FIFA World Cups.
Welbeck started his career at Manchester United. He developed under Sir Alex Ferguson and won the Premier League, two League Cups, two Community Shields, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
In 2014, he moved to Arsenal, scoring 32 goals in 126 matches over five seasons. He won the FA Cup and Community Shield before transferring to Watford and then Brighton.
At Brighton, he played more than 200 games and was a steady scorer, netting 26 goals in the Premier League over the last two seasons.
Welbeck earned 42 caps for England, scoring 16 goals during his eight-year senior career. He played in UEFA Euro 2012 and two FIFA World Cups.
