Chelsea has signed Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa on a permanent deal. The Premier League club announced this on Sunday.

The 33-year-old was part of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning team. He has signed a three-year contract with Chelsea.

“I’m delighted to be at this football club,” Martinez said on The Blues’ website.

“Coming to Chelsea, for me and my family, was an easy decision to make and I’m just over the moon. I can’t wait to get started.

“I want to be successful here. I’m someone who wants to win at everything I do and I want to bring that here to this football club because it’s a football club that wins titles, so I think it’s a good match.

“I’m all passion and I play with my heart. I will give 100 percent every game, every training session to make the club, my teammates and the supporters proud.”

Martinez joined Arsenal from Independiente in August 2010 when he was just 17. He spent several seasons on loan before becoming a regular player in the 2019/20 season, helping Arsenal win the FA Cup.

He also won the Community Shield with Arsenal at the start of the following season before moving to Aston Villa in September 2020.

Martinez made 256 appearances for Villa over his six seasons there. He helped the club win the UEFA Europa League in May.

He made his debut for Argentina in June 2021 and has since earned 67 caps. He won the Copa America in 2021 and 2024, and the World Cup in 2022.

Martinez also won the Yashin Trophy for the best goalkeeper in the world at the 2023 and 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremonies.

Aston Villa released a statement on its X page, saying Martinez “will always be remembered for his part in our recent journey and success.” They wished him well at Chelsea.
