Manchester City has signed Argentina goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille on a two-year deal. Both clubs announced the transfer on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old will be the number-two goalkeeper at City, working behind Italian Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Rulli expressed his excitement about the move, saying, "This is an amazing opportunity for me and one I had to grasp." This will be his second time at City. He spent the 2016/17 season there but did not play in any first-team matches.

He added, "When the chance to join Manchester City comes along, you have to go for it. Everyone knows what an impressive club this is."

Rulli continued, "City’s success over a long time has been impressive. Everyone I have spoken to about City said I had to join them because they are a club with incredibly high standards."

He said, "My job now is to train hard, get to know the players and staff, and do everything I can to reach my best level."

Rulli has played eight times for Argentina. He was part of the squad that won the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa America. He also reached the World Cup final last month but lost to Spain.

Before this, he played for clubs like Real Sociedad, Villarreal, Montpellier, and Ajax. He is known for scoring a penalty in Villarreal’s 2021 Europa League final win over Manchester United. He also saved a penalty from David de Gea to help his team win the trophy 11-10 in the shootout.

Marseille faced some financial issues. They were fined 10 million euros for not meeting UEFA break-even targets. Because of this, they need to sell players this summer to balance their finances.

Also, Marseille finished fifth in Ligue 1 during the 2025-2026 season. This means they will not play in the Champions League this season.
