Chelsea Interested in Aston Villa's Emiliano Martínez

Chelsea have reached out to Emiliano Martínez’s agents as they think about signing the Aston Villa goalkeeper.

On Wednesday, BBC Sport reported that the 33-year-old Argentina international might be up for transfer after Villa signed Japan's Zion Suzuki from Parma for about £30m earlier this month.

Chelsea's interest comes as they worry about Robert Sánchez's performances.

The Spanish goalkeeper made several mistakes in Chelsea’s first Premier League match against Fulham. Even with these errors, Chelsea managed to win 3-2 at Craven Cottage.

Martínez has also caught the eye of Juventus this summer, but a move to the Italian club fell through due to concerns about a finger injury.

Juventus later signed Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario on loan instead.

A transfer to Chelsea might give both clubs another chance to work together. Chelsea and Villa have kept a good relationship over the past transfer windows.

Chelsea signed Morgan Rogers from Villa for a club-record £117m. Also, Alejandro Garnacho moved to Villa on an initial loan deal.

Villa is also interested in Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, valued at around £65m. He could reunite with manager Unai Emery there.

The clubs have previously made deals known as a “PSR swap.” This includes Ian Maatsen going to Villa and Omari Kellyman moving to Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Xavi Alonso has continued to support Sánchez despite his tough start.

Alonso mentioned that his talks with Sánchez have focused on the team and not just the individual. He stressed that Chelsea is still working on development and making changes.

Mike Penders, Chelsea’s second-choice goalkeeper, is also in the running to start against Luton Town in the Carabao Cup.

As Chelsea looks into Martínez’s availability, their goalkeeping situation could become one of the key stories to follow before the transfer window shuts.
