Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has thrown out the idea that Barcelona are clear favourites for Sunday’s El Clásico. He said the rivalry's intensity makes it hard to know who will win until the match is done.
As the teams get ready for the October 25 match at Spotify Camp Nou, this is their first league meeting for the 2026-27 season. Courtois sounded confident, even though Barcelona has had a strong start this season.
Right now, Barcelona is six points ahead in La Liga.
Fabrizio Romano shared on X on Friday that Courtois said, “Barcelona the favorite in El Clásico? In the end, you never really know until you actually play the match.” He added, “I think we’re in good shape and feeling confident… it’s 50-50, always.”
Courtois recognized that Barcelona is doing well in the league, but he believes in Real Madrid’s quality. He said, “They’ve performed very well in La Liga, but I have faith in our team. I believe we can go there and win.”
He also talked about the challenge of playing away from home but kept a positive attitude. “It’s true that it’s their home ground; playing away always makes for a different kind of match, but I trust our team. For me, even when one side might be in better form than the other, Clásicos are always 50-50.”
These comments come as the title race heats up. A win for Real Madrid in Catalonia would bring them closer to the leaders. But if Barcelona wins, it would help them stay strong at the top of the table.
Courtois’s words show the traditional view about El Clásico. In this match, form, table position, and home advantage mean less when these two top clubs face off.
