Former Manchester City midfielder David Silva has decided to come back to professional football at the age of 40. He will join Hong Kong Premier League club Sha Tin.

Silva retired in 2023 after getting an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament during pre-season training with Real Sociedad. Now, he is ready to start a new phase in his impressive career.

The Spanish midfielder had a great time with Manchester City, winning four Premier League titles and 11 major trophies over ten years. He also celebrated winning the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships with Spain.

Silva shared his excitement about returning to football and experiencing life in Hong Kong. "I’m so excited to go to Hong Kong and enjoy the local culture, the food in Sha Tin and, of course, football in Hong Kong," he said in a video on his Instagram on Wednesday.

Sha Tin confirmed that Silva will first focus on settling into the team and getting back into shape before he plays in any competitive matches. "David Silva will be in Hong Kong soon to settle in, link up with squad training, and build up to peak match fitness before making his pitch debut," the club said.

Currently, Sha Tin sits in eighth place in the Hong Kong Premier League after four matches. They are set to play against Hong Kong Football Club on October 18.

Silva's return comes two years after he announced his retirement. He built a reputation as one of the best midfielders of his time.

The former Spain international also has a statue outside Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium. This honors his ten years of hard work and success at the club.
