The Democratic Party has gained control of the US Senate by winning 53 seats, with many still being counted.
The US Senate has 100 members, and 35 of those seats were contested in Tuesday’s election. Democrats needed to flip four seats to take control but have already flipped seven according to CNN. Now, they hold 53 seats.
The Republicans controlled the previous Congress with a 53-seat majority. The Democrats had 45 seats, along with two independents in their group.
House of Representatives
A similar win is expected for the Democrats in the House of Representatives. All 435 seats were up for election, and the Democrats currently lead with 197 to 114. Many results were still pending as of early Wednesday.
Some of the Senate seats won by the Democrats include South Carolina, a state they have not won since 1998. The seat was formerly held by senator Lindsey Graham, who passed away this year. His sister, Darling Graham, has now taken his place.
The Democrats also flipped seats in North Carolina, Ohio, Kansas, and Texas, where they had not won since 1994.
