A motorcycle rider and his passenger died on Friday morning when a vehicle crashed into their motorcycle at Bukuru Low-Cost Junction in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
A mob attacked the driver of the vehicle after the accident. His condition was not clear at the time of this report.
Two eyewitnesses, Sharon Ibas and Tuwan Timothy, confirmed details of the crash. They spoke about a collision involving a Toyota Hiace bus, a Peugeot Boxer J5, and the motorcycle.
Mr Ibas said the accident happened around 9 a.m. while he was on his way to Abuja in a Blue Whales Toyota Hiace bus. He explained that their driver stopped near the junction. Youths and vigilante members were controlling traffic because of a funeral procession.
According to him, the Peugeot Boxer J5, which was coming from behind, did not stop and crashed into the back of the bus. Mr Ibas said the Peugeot driver then hit the motorcycle, killing both the rider and passenger on the spot.
"While our vehicle was approaching Bukuru, there was a procession with people carrying a corpse. Youths and vigilante members were stopping cars to control traffic. Our driver stopped, but the Peugeot Boxer driver did not stop and slammed into our vehicle from behind," he said.
Mr Ibas added that the crowd attacked the Peugeot driver and beat him badly. He said that security personnel arrived later and saved the driver, but he was unsure if the man survived the mob's attack.
"The driver was lynched by angry youths. I don't know if he made it after the beating. Security officials came and rescued him," he said.
He also mentioned that the mob destroyed the Peugeot vehicle in the process. Mr Timothy, the second eyewitness, backed up Mr Ibas’s story and offered more details on what happened.
When we reached out, the spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Plateau State, Yakubu Longsan, said he contacted the command’s Bukuru unit. They told him that the accident had not been reported to them.
Mr Longsan urged the public to report road accidents to the FRSC. He advised people to reach out for updates on rescue efforts and emergency responses.
This incident happened days after a crash on Bukuru Express Road in Jos South, which killed a father and his son, injuring seven others. The FRSC said the crash was due to overspeeding and reckless driving.
