Driver flees after killing two men in Enugu

The Enugu State Police are investigating a hit-and-run driver who allegedly killed two men at Airport Corner in Emene, Enugu East Local Government Area.

This incident happened around 10 am on Wednesday. The driver was reportedly coming from Emene towards the city center when he lost control of his vehicle while speeding through the area.

SP Daniel Ndukwe, the police spokesperson, confirmed the incident. He said, "A hit-and-run driver killed two people, all male, and ran away. The police have a report of the incident, and investigation is ongoing to track down the driver."

An eyewitness shared that one of the victims had stopped his car because it broke down. He went to a nearby mechanic to get tools to fix it.

The witness said the victim was on his way back with the tools when the speeding driver crashed into him. The impact killed him instantly and cut off one of his legs.

The driver did not stop. He then crashed into another man, who also died, before fleeing the scene.

Olivia Sandra, another eyewitness, said, "After he finished fixing the car, he was about to return the tools to the workshop when a very reckless driver knocked him down at excessive speed as he entered the corner.

"He was killed instantly and one of his legs was cut off. He also knocked another person down, killing two of them instantly, and zoomed off."

Another witness noted that the driver did not stop to help the victims. Instead, he continued driving toward the Airport Roundabout at high speed, nearly hitting other road users.

This tragic incident happened just days after the police ordered strict enforcement of traffic laws in the state.

The police's directive came after they noted a growing disrespect for traffic rules by motorists. They said this disregard has led to traffic jams, accidents, loss of lives, and damage to property.

CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, the Commissioner of Police, gave this order following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for nationwide enforcement of traffic laws.
