Two women who have not been identified lost their lives in a hit-and-run accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Friday evening.
Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Head of Media for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, confirmed the news in a statement.
Akinbiyi said the crash happened around 6:31 pm at Car Park C, on the outbound side of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The victims were trying to cross the highway when a vehicle hit them.
He mentioned that the driver of the vehicle fled the scene right after the accident.
TRACE reported that a white Mini Howo truck, with registration number AKR 201 XD, was later found and towed by officers from the Redeemed Police Motor Traffic Division.
The statement explained, “At about 1836HRS on 12/06/2026, a fatal hit-and-run crash occurred at Car Park C Outbound, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
“Two unidentified female pedestrians attempting to cross the road were knocked down by an unknown vehicle, which fled the scene.”
Akinbiyi said one woman died at the scene. The second woman died while being taken to the hospital.
He added that emergency responders from Ogun State Emergency Medical Services Ambulance Service helped the victims and took them to Redeemed Hospital.
“One female victim was confirmed dead at the scene, while the second female victim later died during the evacuation process to the hospital.
“Upon arrival at Redeemed Hospital, medical personnel confirmed both victims dead and subsequently deposited their remains at the hospital morgue,” the statement said.
He also mentioned that TRACE operatives, along with officials from OGSEMSAS, the Amotekun Corps, and the Redeemed Police Motor Traffic Division, managed traffic and secured the accident scene.
Akinbiyi noted that the crash caused some traffic delay along the highway but normal movement returned after the victims were evacuated and the scene was cleared.
He concluded that the police are now handling the case for further investigation.
This incident adds to the increasing number of pedestrian deaths on major roads in Ogun State, especially along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
In March, PUNCH Online reported that an unidentified man was killed in a hit-and-run at the Magboro end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway while crossing the road.
Witnesses said the driver ran away immediately after the crash, leaving the man to die on the spot.
Similarly, in May, a pedestrian was hit and killed by a Toyota Coaster bus at Imowo, along the Imowo-Ibadan Road in Ijebu Ode.
Traffic officials said the cause of the crash was the victim’s attempt to cross the road without checking for oncoming vehicles.
