One person died and 13 others were hurt in a crash on Eruku Bridge along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State.
PUNCH Metro learned on Sunday from a Facebook user, Akinola Oluwarantimi, that the accident happened in the afternoon.
Multiple videos shared by Oluwarantimi showed people at the scene trying to help the victims trapped in the wrecked vehicle.
The vehicle was lying on its side, and some victims were seen sitting on the ground, groaning in pain.
A female victim was found lying still on the road with blood stains around her on the expressway.
Afolabi Odunsi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed the incident on Sunday. He said the crash happened at about 12:00 p.m. near Eruku Bridge on the Abeokuta-Lagos route.
Odunsi stated that a total of 16 people were involved, including two adult men, 12 adult women, and two girls.
He explained that "one adult female lost her life, while 13 others, including two adult males and 11 adult females, sustained injuries. Two girls were unharmed."
Odunsi said the accident was caused by a combination of speeding and a tyre burst. The vehicle involved was a white Mazda bus with the registration number MUS 543XZ.
"The probable causes of the crash were speed violation and tyre burst. The crash involved a white Mazda bus with registration number MUS 543XZ," he said.
Odunsi added that some jewellery and bags were found at the scene.
The FRSC reported that rescue workers arrived within five minutes after the distress call and began evacuating the victims.
"The injured victims were taken to State Specialist Hospital, Ifo, for immediate medical attention, while the body was taken to the morgue," the statement said.
The FRSC advised drivers to check their tyres often and avoid speeding, especially on highways, to prevent accidents.
This incident comes just a month after another vehicle fell off the same Eruku Bridge, killing 11 people.
PUNCH Metro reported on May 11 that the earlier accident happened at night.
Odunsi had stated that the crash involved a gold Toyota vehicle with the registration number GGE722KJ. The vehicle reportedly flipped and fell off the bridge.
He noted that all 11 passengers in that vehicle, including 10 adult men and one adult woman, died in that accident.
