Accident involving five vehicles on Lagos bridge

Five vehicles crashed at Otedola Bridge, heading towards Berger, Lagos, on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

LASEMA confirmed that there were no deaths from the crash.

The vehicles included a truck carrying a generator, a container truck with registration number ENU 135ZG, a trailer with an unknown registration number, a white Honda with the registration number LSR 870BF, and a Lexus with registration number KTU 682HX.

LASEMA said its LRT Tiger Squad stationed at C3 was alerted to the crash at 1:18 p.m. They arrived at the scene about 10 minutes later.

The agency explained that the container truck had a mechanical fault while moving. It lost control and crashed into three other vehicles.

Another truck then hit the vehicles, causing more collisions.

Victims taken to Trauma Centre

LASEMA reported that its emergency responders, along with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigeria Police Force, secured the area and managed traffic.

Paramedics treated those hurt in the crash at the scene before taking them to the Trauma Centre for further treatment.

Recovery operations were ongoing. Private towing trucks and a crane were brought in to remove the damaged vehicles and ease traffic.

LASEMA's Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, praised the emergency responders and agencies involved in the effort.

He advised motorists, especially drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, to regularly check their vehicles, follow road safety rules, and be careful on major roads.

LASEMA also reminded residents to call 767 or 112 for emergencies.

In a separate post on X, the police confirmed that no one died in the accident.

"Five (5) individuals have so far been successfully rescued; no fatality has been recorded as of this time, while the evacuation of the vehicles involved is ongoing.

"Efforts are also ongoing to reopen the road to motorists. The Command urges motorists to exercise patience, cooperate with emergency responders, and be cautious while using the route," the police wrote.
