Nigeria's D'Tigers are ready to kick off their second round of the 2027 World Cup qualifiers. They will face Cameroon, the group leaders, today, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Coach David Fizdale is leading the team as they prepare in Tunisia for the match at the Radès Salle Multidisciplinaire de Radès.
D'Tigers have a good record against Cameroon. They have won three out of their last four games against them.
After the Cameroon match, D'Tigers will play South Sudan on August 28 and Cape Verde on August 30. They need to perform well to stay in the race for a spot in the World Cup.
Nigeria is one of 12 teams that moved to the second round of the African qualifiers. This follows the first three windows held in November 2025, February 2026, and July 2026.
The results from the first round will affect the second phase. Every game matters as teams aim for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar.
D'Tigers currently have 10 points from the first three windows. They are one point behind Cameroon, who also has 11 points. Guinea, Tunisia, and South Sudan also have 10 points, while Cape Verde has nine.
In the second round, each team will play against three other teams that advanced from the other group. This will happen over two more windows in August 2026 and February 2027.
After the six games, the top two teams in each group and the best third-placed team will qualify for the World Cup.
The final window for qualifying will be in February 2027. Five African teams will earn their tickets to the World Cup in Qatar.
Besides their World Cup ambitions, doing well in the African qualifiers could also improve D'Tigers' chances of qualifying for the FIBA pre-Olympic tournament.
