Nigeria’s Flamingos are preparing for their biggest test yet in Group B. They will face the defending champions North Korea in their last group match at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Friday. Qualification for the knockout rounds is on the line.
Head coach Akeem Busari’s team will arrive at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, Pitch 1, Rabat, knowing a strong showing against a top nation could decide their future in the tournament. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. Nigerian time. North Korea, led by Ji Yun-nam, comes into this match with confidence after scoring 12 goals in their first two games.
The Asian champions have shown why they are among the favorites for the title, winning convincingly against Puerto Rico and Poland. For Nigeria, the focus will be on managing North Korea’s attack while taking advantage of their own chances.
The Flamingos bounced back from their opening loss to Poland with a win over Puerto Rico. But Friday’s match will be much tougher against a team that has won the tournament four times and is aiming for a fifth title.
Both Nigeria and North Korea are appearing in their ninth FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. They both played in the first tournament back in 2008. North Korea has a strong record in the competition and is one of the most successful teams.
Nigeria will be looking to build on their best finish of third place in 2022 and keep their hopes alive for another deep run in the tournament. Their journey began on October 17 with a disappointing 2-1 loss to Poland in their opening match.
Poland took the lead with a penalty from Skrzypczak in the 33rd minute. Skrok then made it 2-0 in the 65th minute, putting Nigeria in a tough spot. The Flamingos managed to score through Oluebube Umejiaku in the 79th minute. But their late efforts for an equalizer fell short as Poland held on for the win.
This loss put pressure on Busari’s side ahead of their next game. They needed a strong response against Puerto Rico to keep their qualification hopes alive. On October 20, Nigeria responded well, winning 2-0 to claim their first three points.
Oluwakemi Adegbuyi scored the first goal in the 25th minute, rewarding Nigeria’s attacking play. Precious Oscar, a substitute, sealed the win in stoppage time. This victory lifted the Flamingos to three points after two games and boosted their morale ahead of the North Korea clash.
But the task ahead is much more challenging. North Korea has been scoring easily throughout the group stage. The Flamingos need to combine their recent confidence with focus and discipline in their play.
North Korea is making a strong statement in their title defense, winning both of their opening matches convincingly. They started with a dominant 6-0 win over Puerto Rico on October 17. Yu Jong-hyang and Kim Won-sim both scored twice. Ri Ui-gyong and Ri Ye-rim also added goals as the champions overwhelmed their opponents.
If that win showed their attacking strength, their following 6-1 win over Poland on October 20 sent an even stronger message. Ri Ye-rim, Yu Jong-hyang, Kim Won-sim, and Ri Ui-gyong scored while Gałuszka scored Poland’s only goal.
Two wins, 12 goals scored, and just one conceded have put North Korea at the top of Group B with six points. Their attacking power poses a major challenge for Nigeria. The Flamingos must avoid giving North Korea space in the penalty area.
North Korea has many players who can score, making it hard for Nigeria to focus on just one threat. Busari’s team needs to keep their defensive shape, communicate well, and avoid mistakes that could let the champions take control.
North Korea is leading the group with six points and a goal difference of +11. Poland is in second place with three points and a goal difference of -4. Nigeria is third, also with three points but a goal difference of +1.
Poland holds second place right now. Though Nigeria and Poland have the same points, the tournament rules use head-to-head results as the first tiebreaker. This gives Nigeria a better position than Poland. Puerto Rico is at the bottom without any points, having conceded eight more goals than they scored.
The last group matches will decide which teams move on to the knockout stage. Nigeria’s match against North Korea and Poland’s game against Puerto Rico will affect the final standings. The Flamingos still have a chance to qualify, but the result against North Korea will be key.
A win will guarantee Nigeria a spot in the knockout stage. But if Poland beats Puerto Rico, all three teams could end up with six points, making the head-to-head results important for final positions.
In that case, Nigeria’s margin of victory over North Korea could be very significant. A draw will give Nigeria four points but will make them depend on Poland’s match result. If Poland loses, Nigeria will finish second. But if Poland draws or wins, Nigeria could drop to third, depending on the best third-placed team ranking.
A loss would leave Nigeria with three points, and their hopes would hinge on other group matches and their ranking among third-placed teams. So, avoiding a heavy defeat is crucial as overall goal difference might affect qualification.
The Flamingos need to find a balance of ambition and caution. A win would secure their spot in the next round. But they must avoid letting North Korea dominate the match.
Despite North Korea’s strong tournament history, previous encounters show Nigeria can compete against them. The teams have met twice at the World Cup, with each winning once.
Their first meeting was on September 5, 2010, when Nigeria won 3-2. Ngozi Okobi scored twice, and Francisca Ordega added another. North Korea replied with two goals. Nigeria held on for the win.
North Korea got their revenge six years later on October 8, 2016. Ri Hae-yon’s hat trick led to a 3-0 victory for North Korea. The overall record is even, with Nigeria winning once and North Korea once. There have been no draws.
These past matches featured different players but remind us that Nigeria has beaten North Korea before at the World Cup. This should inspire the current team.
For Nigeria to challenge the defending champions, their attackers must seize opportunities. Adegbuyi has already shown her impact by scoring against Puerto Rico. Umejiaku, who scored against Poland, will also be key as they look to break through North Korea’s defense.
Oscar’s goal against Puerto Rico shows the importance of having players ready to make a difference late in the game. But Nigeria’s success does not rely only on their forwards. The midfield must disrupt North Korea’s play to protect the defense and transition quickly.
Defensively, the Flamingos need to stay compact and disciplined. North Korea can take advantage of open spaces, so Nigeria cannot allow them to attack freely. Busari’s tactics will be important for finding the right balance between defending and supporting the attack.
Friday’s match gives Nigeria a chance to test themselves against the champions and take a big step towards the knockout rounds. North Korea is confident after their strong start. But the Flamingos have shown resilience by bouncing back from their opening defeat.
They must deliver a complete performance against a team that has proven its attacking quality. Nigeria’s goal is clear: stay organized, take chances, and fight for every ball. A solid defensive display and better finishing could give the Flamingos the chance to upset the champions.
With their hopes for qualification on the line, there’s little room for mistakes. The Flamingos must go into the match with belief, calmness, and the drive to turn their dreams into reality. For Busari and his players, the mission is simple: rise to the challenge, secure a knockout stage spot, and keep Nigeria’s hopes of improving on their third-place finish in 2022 alive.
