At least eight people have been arrested over alleged homosexual acts in Kazaure Local Government Area of Jigawa State. This followed a complaint from a resident in Kanti area of Kazaure town.
Dauda Hadejia, the Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa State Hisbah Board, confirmed the arrests in a statement to PUNCH on Saturday in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State. The complaint came from a 22-year-old man who reported that nine individuals had engaged in homosexual acts with him on different occasions.
Hadejia said the complainant also claimed he later contracted HIV, which he linked to these alleged acts. He said the complainant asked Hisbah to help him seek justice for what he described as deception that harmed his life.
After the complaint, Hisbah operatives started an investigation and began looking for the nine individuals named by the complainant. "Our men swung into action after receiving the complaint and so far eight suspects have been arrested, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspect," Hadejia said.
During initial investigations, the eight arrested suspects reportedly admitted to engaging in the act with the complainant. Hadejia noted that the Hisbah Corps has gathered important information and evidence for court.
In the statement, Hadejia quoted the Deputy Commander-General of the Jigawa State Hisbah Board, Dr Hussain Baban. He urged parents to be more vigilant about their children's upbringing. "Dr. Baban urged parents to pay greater attention to the upbringing of their children and monitor the people they associate with," Hadejia said.
Dr. Baban also called on the public to fear God and be mindful of their actions. Hadejia added that the investigation is still ongoing and the suspects will face charges in court when the investigation is done.
According to Hadejia, the DCG thanked the Jigawa State Government for its support and cooperation with the Hisbah Board in carrying out its duties.
