Enugu Air Launches Flight to Douala, Strengthening Ties with Cameroon

Enugu Air's first flight to Douala marks a big step in connecting Enugu with Cameroon. This new link opens doors for trade, tourism, and investment between the two countries.

On Wednesday, 23 September, at 2:48 p.m., the Enugu Air plane landed at Douala International Airport. Passengers and officials cheered as they welcomed this historic flight.

For those on board, this flight represented a journey that started in Enugu, crossing Nigeria’s borders for the first time with the state-owned airline.

As the plane taxied, the mood at the airport changed. Cameroonian officials, airport staff, and members of the Nigerian community gathered to greet the plane and its passengers. The excitement in the air was clear.

Some of the first passengers on the Enugu Air flight included Mrs Chukwuma, Mrs Love Chidiogarum, and Mr Ogbonna Jude. The airline gave them gifts to thank them for flying.

Mrs Chidiogarum was thrilled that she no longer needs to travel to Lagos first to catch a flight to Douala. "I doubted this initially when I was booking. Before, we normally travel first to Lagos and in some instances, we need to book hotels. All these come with cost. But now, we have a direct flight and in less than one hour, I am in Cameroon."

She added, "I am so happy because I come to Enugu often. I have a school in Enugu. So, next month I will still fly Enugu Air back to Enugu."

Another happy passenger, Arsenal Bruno Chiagozie, praised the state government for this achievement. He urged others to use the airline. "I am happy and proud to be an Enugu man. I believe that very soon this airline will conquer Africa," he said.

The inaugural flight marks Enugu Air’s first step outside Nigeria. It creates a direct connection between Enugu and Douala, linking Nigeria and Cameroon, as well as Southeast and Central Africa. For businesses, this connection means better access to markets. For traders, it means shorter trips and easier movement of goods. For tourists, it means easier travel. For families, it allows them to visit each other more easily. For governments, it opens new ways to deepen economic and cultural ties.

For Enugu, this route positions the state as more than just a Nigerian destination. It aims to be a regional gateway.

Traditionally, Enugu has relied on Lagos and Abuja for international flights. The importance of this moment was clear to the Enugu delegation. It was a chance for Enugu to announce itself to a broader African market. For Enugu Air, this is the start of a plan to make Enugu a hub for people, goods, and ideas moving into Africa and the world.

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, said this development is part of a plan to make the state a top choice for investment, business, and tourism. His goal is to grow the state’s economy to $30 billion.

"Months ago, right here, we watched Enugu take to the skies. In barely six months after a tough regulatory process, Enugu Air got its Air Operator’s License. This is not a mean feat," Mbah stated.

He added, "Today, 14 months after, we can see that dream flying beyond our expectations, as Enugu Air is one of the fastest-growing airlines in Nigeria, without a doubt."

Mbah explained that Enugu Air was created as part of a wider development strategy, not just as a state-owned airline. "But we did not conceive of Enugu Air as a bragging right or because of the clamour, or to gain some political acclaim. Enugu Air is part of the masterplan to make Enugu State the premier destination for investment, living, business and tourism. For us, Enugu Air is part of connecting the dots," he added.

Significance of the Flight

The first flight's importance is highlighted by the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and Cameroon.

At the reception in Douala, Thomas Assoumou, General Manager of Aéroports du Cameroun, noted that the name Enugu is familiar to Cameroonians. He mentioned the sports history between Canon Yaoundé and Enugu Rangers as a link.

"Today, however, we are witnessing a new partnership and a new connection between our two states," Assoumou said.

He added that the new route is also important for the economy. Many Nigerian businessmen live in Cameroon and face challenges moving goods. A reliable air connection can boost economic activity and travel between the two countries.

"When there are no flights, economic activity is hindered, and that is not good for either country," he said.

Dr. Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo, the Commissioner for Trade, Investment, and Industry in Enugu State, called the route a major step for the state’s trade and economic integration. "For decades, the traders, manufacturers, and entrepreneurs of Enugu and the broader region have struggled to access Central African markets," he said.

By simplifying travel, the route can help businesses connect more easily with partners across borders. Africa’s economic integration has often faced challenges, not just from tariffs and border procedures but also from poor transport links. The Enugu-Douala route arrives at a time when discussions about African integration focus more on practical issues like connectivity and market access.

Warm Reception in Douala

The welcome in Douala showed how excited Cameroonian authorities are about this new connection. "Today is not an ordinary day. We are not simply witnessing the landing of an aircraft. We are witnessing the beginning of a new milestone in the economic, cultural and fraternal relationship between our two countries," the Governor of the Littoral Region said.

He described the initiative as a new bridge between Nigeria and Cameroon, linking it to a vision of a more connected Africa.

Another Cameroonian official highlighted the benefits for Nigerians in Douala. He mentioned that this connection could allow larger amounts of products to move between the countries.

The Mayor of Douala, Roger Mbassa Ndinè, also welcomed this development. He recalled the historical ties between Enugu and Cameroon through football and other ways.

Enugu as a Gateway

For Captain Tolu Ita, the Chief Executive Officer of the airline, the first international flight shows a new way to see the city. "We are not merely launching a flight; we are launching a new chapter," she said.

"This is a chapter in which Enugu is no longer simply where a journey begins or ends. Enugu is becoming a gateway," she added.

Ita said the movement created by this new route is more than just about one aircraft. "Today, much bigger than an aircraft will be moving across our skies. Opportunity will be moving. Business will be moving. People will be moving. Ideas will be moving. And Enugu will be moving with them. This is what makes today so significant."

This is the bigger story behind the airline’s international growth. Enugu Air didn’t start with international routes. It has gradually connected Enugu with places like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and others. The Douala flight is the first major step beyond Nigeria.

Ita explained that the airline aims to create a stronger network across Africa while also opening doors to international markets.

However, there is a challenge to make sure the excitement of this first flight leads to ongoing connectivity. Ita assured passengers and stakeholders that the airline is committed to keeping the route active. "We are not like some airlines that start operations and stop shortly afterwards. What we do is go where we intend to go, remain committed and ensure that the connectivity we have established today continues," she said.

Looking to the future, Ita said the airline’s goal is to connect people, markets, and opportunities.

The Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, also stressed the need for consistency. He noted that the airline is not treating the international route as a separate project.

Governor Mbah aims to attract three million visitors to Enugu State each year. For this goal to be realistic, good transport links are key.

"Businesspeople need efficient access. Investors need to move between markets. International visitors need to know the city is accessible. An airline can therefore play a big part in a broader tourism and investment strategy," the SSG added.

Onyia emphasized the importance of giving Dr. Peter Mbah another four years to continue his work. "This is a Governor that in three years has done unimaginable things for this State and for this region," he said.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) also praised this development. FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Onabanjo-Kuku, represented by Mrs Onyeka Udenze, said Enugu Air’s first international flight shows Nigeria’s growing ability to connect people and businesses across West and Central Africa.

She noted that Akanu Ibiam International Airport is taking steps to become a regional hub. FAAN remains committed to providing the infrastructure and support needed for such services.

The NCAA also highlighted the possibilities that come with direct flights. Represented by the Director of Air Transport Regulations, Mrs Olayinka Babaoye-Iruobe, the agency said the Enugu-Douala link could boost trade, investment, tourism, and people movement while strengthening ties between Nigeria and Cameroon.

Clearly, while Governor Mbah wants to position Enugu as a gateway to the world, the Douala route is already a practical step in that direction. For businesses, it provides better access to markets. For travelers, it offers a quicker connection. For both Nigeria and Cameroon, it builds a new bridge for closer economic, cultural, and personal ties.
