Enugu Commissioner Urges Women to Stay United and Educate Girls

The Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs Ngozi Enih, has emphasized that women should stick together and focus on improving themselves. She described women as a strong force for economic growth.

Mrs Enih also urged women to ensure their children, especially girls, go to school. She pointed out that Governor Peter Mbah has made quality education accessible by establishing 267 Smart Green Schools in all 260 wards of the state.

She made these comments on the last day of the General August Meeting of Nomeh Unateze United Women Association in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

According to her, the theme for this year’s August Meeting, “Resilience,” as announced earlier by the First Lady of Enugu State, Mrs Nkechinyere Mbah, highlights the importance of unity, commitment, self-improvement, and determination in reaching shared goals.

Mrs Enih explained that the August Meeting is a chance for women across Igbo land to look back at their progress, tackle challenges, and encourage one another to stay focused in building a better society.

She urged the women of Nomeh Unateze to stay united and aim for success. She reminded them of their rights and the need to fight against gender-based violence.

“Our central message in this year’s August Meeting is ‘Resilience.’ No matter the situation, just be resilient. The great women of Nomeh, I want to encourage you to be resilient, no matter what.

“Before, our children were sent to live with others only because they promised to educate them. But they ended up mistreating the children. Today in Enugu, no woman has any excuse not to send her children to school because Governor Peter Mbah has made quality education free by building Smart Green Schools in all 260 wards of Enugu State. No one charges you. Plus, the kids get one meal at school daily. They also receive free tablets, uniforms, and other learning materials.

“Lastly, I appeal to you to keep this unity strong because unity is strength,” she said. She also donated cash and wrappers to the women.

The Patron of Nomeh Unateze United Women Association and former President, Mrs Chinwe Okonkwo, praised Governor Mbah for his development projects in the community. She encouraged him to continue leading the state well.

“Without the security and many infrastructures he has given our town, we probably would not see this many women. But we are happy, as you can see. I urge our women to listen to the message of unity and perseverance from the First Lady of Enugu State,” Mrs Okonkwo said.

In her speech, the current President of the Association, Mrs Chinelo Egbo, declared that the women of Nomeh fully support the governor for the 2027 elections.

Earlier, Uche Anichukwu, the Senior Special Assistant to the Enugu State Governor on Media (External Relations), spoke about the many development projects the Mbah administration is carrying out in the community. These include the Nomeh-Mburubu-Nara Road, Nomeh-Oduma Road, Smart Green School, and a Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centre.

He encouraged the women and the whole community to keep loving unity and peaceful living, as well as support for the governor and the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The 2026 August General Meeting of Nomeh Unateze United Women Association, which was opened by the community's traditional ruler, HRH Igwe Israel Mbah, on Tuesday, included discussions with different sectors of the community, counseling sessions, health education, vocational training, and teachings on preventing gender-based violence.
