The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said its team has put out a fire at Purple Crown Hotel on Balogun Street along Awolowo Road in Ikeja, Lagos. Thankfully, no one was injured or killed in the incident.
Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, shared this information in a statement on Saturday. The fire was reported at 9:52 am and affected a room on the hotel’s first floor.
Oke-Osanyintolu said that the agency’s Tiger Squad worked with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Nigeria Police. They got to the hotel within 10 minutes of the emergency call.
"When responders arrived, they found that a room on the first floor had been badly damaged by fire," he said.
The initial investigation showed that "the fire may have started from an electrical fault in the affected room." Oke-Osanyintolu also mentioned that the fire caused a lot of damage from fire and smoke to part of the building.
He pointed out that there were no injuries or fatalities. All guests and hotel staff were safely moved to a designated area away from harm. "There was no loss of life or injury recorded. Everyone was evacuated to a safe spot," the statement read.
He added that a roll call was done with the help of the response team and police officers to ensure everyone was accounted for and safe. According to him, the fire was controlled and completely put out thanks to the combined efforts of LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the police.
"The joint operation aimed to control the fire, stop it from spreading to other rooms, and keep both occupants and responders safe," Oke-Osanyintolu said.
He mentioned that access to the hotel was restricted for safety reasons due to the smoke and fire damage. The affected area of the hotel is still blocked off, "pending a thorough structural and electrical safety check by the relevant authorities."
"The situation is now fully under control. The fire has been put out and the immediate threat is gone. Normal operations will only begin after safety officials give clearance," he added.
Oke-Osanyintolu praised the emergency responders for their "speed, professionalism, and teamwork" during the operation. He said their quick action "prevented the situation from getting worse and saved lives and property."
He advised hotel owners, facility managers, and business operators to focus on regular electrical checks, install fire safety equipment, and make sure staff are trained for emergency evacuations. "Following the Lagos State Safety Commission rules is very important," he said.
He also asked the public to stay calm and report emergencies quickly using Lagos State’s emergency toll-free numbers: 112, 767, or 08000 112 112.
