A part of the Senate wing of the National Assembly caught fire on Wednesday. This happened right after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) finished screening Zainab Marwa. She was being considered as the North-east representative on the commission's board.
The fire started in the kitchen area next to Hearing Room 107. That is where the Senate Committee on the NDDC held the screening.
According to PREMIUM TIMES, a microwave oven exploded. This explosion caused the fire after the microwave was left unattended in the kitchen of the committee room.
Luckily, no one was hurt, and no important documents or items were damaged before the fire was put out.
Witnesses reported that lawmakers, staff, and others in the area ran to safety when they saw smoke coming from the committee room.
The committee chairman, Asuquo Ekpenyong from Cross River South Senatorial District, and the senator from Kwara Central, Salihu Mustapha, stayed at the scene. They helped to control the fire and stopped it from spreading to other parts of the National Assembly complex.
