The US midterm elections have made history with the election of several new leaders.

America now has its first Muslim senator, first female Native American senator, first openly gay senator, and first Gen Z woman in Congress. The country also elected its first black female governor and its first female Native American governor.

This election has been called the ‘Blue Tsunami’ as the Democratic Party won many seats in both the House and Senate.

Most of these new leaders are Democrats, who are seen as a more diverse party. But the Republican Party also made some progress.

In Michigan, voters chose Democrat Abdul El-Sayed for the Senate. He beat Republican Mike Roger and became the first Muslim elected to the chamber.

His victory kept Republicans from flipping the seat of retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters in the state.

In Minnesota, Democratic candidate Peggy Flanagan was elected to the Senate.

She is the first Native American woman elected to the US Senate. If Alaska Democrat Mary Peltola wins her race, she will share this honor with Ms. Flanagan.

Ms. Flanagan, who was the lieutenant governor for two terms, defeated Republican Michele Tafoya, a former NFL sideline reporter and conservative podcaster.

Chris Pappas, another Democrat, won the New Hampshire seat and became the first openly gay man in the Senate.

In Colorado’s 1st District, 29-year-old Democrat Melat Kiros was elected to Congress.

She is the first Gen Z woman elected to the House. Her win shows that many people want to see younger voices in politics.

The Democratic Party is expected to hold a Senate majority with 54 seats to 44 for the Republicans. In the House, Democrats have 231 seats compared to the Republicans' 139.

Voters also made history in the gubernatorial elections.

Keisha Bottoms has become the first black woman elected governor in US history after winning Georgia’s race.

The Democrat and former Atlanta mayor also became Georgia’s first Black governor after defeating billionaire Republican Rick Jackson.

Former US Interior Secretary Deb Haaland also made history as the first Native American woman elected governor.

The Democrat won the governorship in New Mexico over Republican Gregg Hull, a former mayor.

The US went from having only three black governors in its entire history to electing several more recently.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore, the third elected Black governor in the country, won re-election.

At the same time, Republican Byron Donalds won the Florida gubernatorial election and became the state’s first Black governor.

Democratic candidate David Crowley also became Wisconsin’s first black governor.
