Five-year-old Ayomide Omotoso made his national table tennis debut at the seventh Adegboyega Efunkoya U-15 National Table Tennis Tournament in Lagos on Thursday. He is the youngest player at this three-day event, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Omotoso is the son of Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso. He played against competitors who are several years older than him at the Indoor Hall of the National Stadium in Surulere.
Even though he lost all his matches, the young player was thrilled about the experience. He said he is determined to work hard before his next competition.
"I am very happy playing because I love table tennis. My dad taught me the game. My opponents are far better than me, but I hope to keep training so I can play better next time," he shared.
Tournament Details
The tournament was organized by the Efunkoya Sports Foundation in partnership with the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation. It attracted over 130 players, including 82 boys and 54 girls.
This competition honored the late Adegboyega Efunkoya. He was a former president of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation and a key figure who promoted the idea of combining sports with education.
Segun Adegboyega, his first son, mentioned that the tournament helps to keep his father's legacy alive while also finding young talents.
"I am so proud and satisfied with what I see today. My father was a passionate table tennis administrator who insisted that players must combine sports with education. With tournaments like this, we can discover talents who will not only make Nigeria proud but also grow into useful individuals in society," he said.
