The Lagos State Table Tennis Association is bringing back its monthly cadet tournament. The competition will start on Saturday, August 23, at the Lagos Country Club in Ikeja.
The goal is to find and nurture young table tennis players in the state. This will give them regular chances to compete and improve their skills.
LSTTA Chairman, Tunji Lawal, believes that regular competition is key for young players to grow.
“Players need regular competition to develop and fulfil their potential,” Lawal said.
He mentioned that the monthly tournament will help cadets build confidence. It will also help them improve their temperament during matches and gain important experience early on.
Lawal pointed out players like Matthew Kuti, Muiz Adegoke, and Sultan Agunbiade. These players came through similar programs before making it to the national team.
According to him, their success shows how important it is to give young players a steady platform to compete. Relying only on big tournaments is not enough.
The tournament will also let coaches see how players perform under pressure. It will encourage healthy competition, discipline, and dedication among the cadets.
Besides competing for medals and recognition, top performers will attract attention from the association. They could even be picked for Lagos State teams.
“As the programme grows and attracts greater sponsorship, we intend to strengthen the incentives available to outstanding players, including equipment and other forms of developmental support,” Lawal said.
He added that the long-term aim is to create a lasting way to develop table tennis in Lagos and Nigeria.
“This tournament is not just about producing monthly winners. It is about discovering tomorrow’s champions,” Lawal said.
