Nigeria's Flamingos got back on track at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. They beat Puerto Rico 2-0 in their second Group B match in Morocco on Tuesday.
Oluwakemi Adegbuyi scored the first goal in the 25th minute. Precious Oscar added another in stoppage time to secure Nigeria’s first win of the tournament.
This win came at a crucial time for coach Akeem Busari’s team. They lost their opening match 2-1 to Poland and needed a good result to boost their chances of moving to the knockout stage.
Nigeria started the game with a lot of energy. Chidi Harmony nearly scored in the 16th minute, but her shot hit the crossbar.
The Flamingos finally broke through when Adegbuyi found the net in the 25th minute. This gave Nigeria a 1-0 lead.
They held onto this lead until half-time. Puerto Rico needed to find a way to respond after going behind.
In the second half, the Flamingos worked hard to defend their lead. Oscar scored in the 90th minute plus three to confirm the victory and secure all three points.
This win was especially important after Nigeria lost to Poland. In that game, Wiktoria Skrzypczak scored a penalty in the 33rd minute. Natalia Skrok added another goal in the 65th minute. Oluebube Umejiaku got one back for Nigeria in the 79th minute, but it was not enough to avoid defeat.
Puerto Rico faced their second straight loss after they lost 6-0 to Korea DPR in their first FIFA World Cup match at any level.
This victory gives Nigeria new energy as they aim for a spot in the Round of 16.
In another Group B match, North Korea defeated Poland 6-1. This big win gives the Flamingos an advantage ahead of their next match against the Koreans on Friday.
The tournament format allows the top two teams in each group to advance automatically. The four best third-placed teams from the six groups will also move on.
