Nigeria’s Flamingos have moved on to the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. They achieved this after beating defending champions Korea DPR 3, 1 on Friday.
The Nigerian team, led by coach Akeem Busari, played exceptionally well against the two-time champions. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi scored the first goal for Nigeria in the 15th minute, giving the Flamingos an early lead.
In the 38th minute, Oluebube Umejiaku added another goal, taking advantage of a great assist from Tosin Rafiu. This put Nigeria firmly ahead in the match.
Kanyinsola Yusuf scored a fantastic free-kick in the 56th minute, putting Nigeria up by three goals. This left the defending champions with a tough challenge ahead.
Korea DPR managed to score through Yu Jong Hyang in the 82nd minute, but the Flamingos held on to celebrate a significant win. Adegbuyi seemed to have scored again in the 88th minute, but the referee disallowed the goal after a video review showed a foul in the build-up.
With this victory, Nigeria finished the group stage with six points. They had lost 2, 1 to Poland in their first match and won 2, 0 against Puerto Rico in their second.
In another Group B match, Poland defeated Puerto Rico 6, 2. This result means Poland, Nigeria, and Korea DPR all finished the group stage with six points each.
